help out the little guy

16 01 2005

if you have been lurking this past week – my site stats say you do exist – you may have noticed a little construction job happening at the bottom of the right hand column. i finally finished my first booklist for this blog. it’s a list of the books that i’m either now reading or are in the pile on my nightstand waiting to be read. this list is the books i’m reading or skimming through to learn more about topics in my professional life. i’ll also be posting a list of the books i’m reading for personal enjoyment and edification.

being the voracious reader that i am, bookstores have Powellsmapalways been a favorite place for me. my favorite bookstore of any i’ve been in is powells “city of books” bookstore in portland, oregon. (click on the map to the right for a larger version) it’s a wonderful experience. if you like books, powells is one of the few surviving independent bookstores.

i recently stumbled upon their web store, powells.com. it blows amazon out of the water when it comes….

to books. i’ve never understood why amazon does list a book’s isbn,
date of publication, or publisher. powells.com does. powells.com also
tells you when can buy a foreign edition because the us edition isn’t
available. powells.com also lists the lowest available price of every
version of the book you are considering (ie, trade paperback, acrobat
reader e-book, book on tape, etc.).

so i decided i wanted to link you my readers – i believe you exist,
i do, i do – directly to the powells.com listing. to do so, i found i
couldn’t use the “booklist” functionality in typepad to do this because
it’s hardwired to default to amazon. but i fugured out a work around
and the links you find from now on will take you powells.com whenever
possible. (yes, I do get a commission on any purchase you make and it’s
higher than amazon’s. so buy, buy, buy! lol)

if you can’t wait until i list a book, you can either use this
search engine (or the one that will permanently be in the right hand
column of this blog) to find the book you need:

or you can sign up for their newsletter to be kept up to date, buy typing your email address in this little red box:

email address:

and if you like books and ever get to portland – you must treat yourself and spend a few hours at the brick and morter Powells!

Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any issues with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a
few months of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any methods to
protect against hackers?
